Dear Ms. Search,

That late May day when we met, I recall letting my parents, teachers, and friends know I NEEDED to be in your class when I entered 5th grade. I waited for my schedule all summer, hoping to be in your homeroom class. You would be the only teacher I’d ever have that looked like me.

During my first year in your class, you established clear boundaries I could not establish for myself in a classroom setting. Because of you, kids stopped touching my hair, and I found and gained the confidence to use my voice. I felt so empowered by your presence– you gave me space to be myself and made sure my peers knew I belonged. I owe my 8-year obsession with Hamilton to your enthusiasm for the musical!

You managed to keep me close for all of my middle school years. Because you taught and lived with so much passion, I fell in love with American history. While Cancer made our time together brief, I carry you in my heart. Thank you for your contributions to our planet.

You’re missed.
Love,

Marie
