Making a difference in my boarding school community and beyond

Technically, I am only outside of school during holidays and school breaks. By attending boarding school, my time outside of the classroom is structured by adults and intended to be highly productive. Regardless, I still use the minimal time I have away from academics to participate in several meaningful activities—student-run initiatives, varsity sports, and musical and artistic endeavors. In each case, my outside-the-classroom time is spent building the community I love.

Each year, I have been elected as my grade’s representative on the Student Diversity Committee (SDC). The diversity and inclusion work of the SDC firmly establishes a sense of belonging in the daily experience of every student. I also founded my school’s first Social Justice Club (SJC), aimed at bridging the gap between my school community and issues in the real world. As the founder of the SJC and a long-time representative of the SDC, I am helping to connect the school’s internal efforts to the broader community and the world. As a club, we further the ideas proposed by the SDC and work to bring important conversations to campus. With my involvement in the SDC, I wanted to use the SJC as a complementary forum to increase student engagement and enhance awareness of the SDC’s work.

What I value most is community and caring for the spaces, places, and time we share to create a sense of community. Therefore, it is important for me to make meaningful contributions and add value to my community.
